Understanding AMC 8 Scores, Awards, and Their Value
The AMC 8 is created by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and, in mainland China, is administered by ASDAN (阿思丹) together with the China Organizing Committee (中国区组委会). It is offered both as an on-campus (offline) sitting and as a home-based (online) sitting, so families can choose the format that suits them. This article explains how the AMC 8 is scored, what each award level means, and why the award holds real value for students.
How the AMC 8 Is Scored
The AMC 8 consists of 25 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 40 minutes, with no calculator permitted. Scoring is simple and transparent: you earn 1 point for each correct answer and 0 points for a wrong or blank answer, for a maximum score of 25. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so it is always worth making your best attempt on every question. Because the contest is entirely multiple-choice, only your final answers are scored; there is no grading of solution steps.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | 25 multiple-choice questions |
| Time limit | 40 minutes (a single window held each January) |
| Correct answer | +1 point |
| Wrong or blank answer | 0 points (no penalty for guessing) |
| Maximum score | 25 points |
Award Levels and What They Recognize
The MAA recognizes high-performing students with several award levels. Exact certificate thresholds are determined by the MAA after each contest, but the tiers below describe the levels students aim for and the ability each one reflects.
What Your Score Means for Your Abilities
| Award | Recognition | Ability Profile | Academic Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinguished Honor Roll | Top 1% of participants | Top-tier level, with strong logical reasoning and comprehensive problem-solving skills. | Proof of top-tier mathematical ability and a solid stepping stone for challenging AMC 10/12. |
| Honor Roll | Top 5% of participants | Excellent level, with a solid foundation and flexible problem-solving skills. | A respected international competition award that demonstrates strong mathematical ability. |
| Achievement Roll | Students in grade 6 and below who perform well | Above-average level, with mastery of core competition knowledge and methods. | Reflection of solid mathematical literacy, laying a strong foundation for further learning. |
Note: Award thresholds can vary from year to year depending on the overall difficulty of that year’s paper. The MAA sets the official cutoffs after the contest, and certificates are issued by the MAA.
Fairness and Exam Security
The AMC 8 is held once a year, in January, with both on-campus and home-based sittings available. To protect the integrity of the contest, the MAA sets an embargo period after the exam during which the questions and answers must not be discussed or shared online. Home-based sittings are proctored through video monitoring, and candidates may only have permitted stationery and blank scratch paper on the desk. These measures help ensure that every student’s score reflects their own ability.
An AMC 8 award is a meaningful credential for students:
Global Recognition: Certificates are issued by the MAA and are recognized internationally.
A Credible Measure of Ability: Because the contest is carefully proctored and embargoed, a strong score is a credible reflection of a student’s mathematical ability.
A Foundation for Higher-Level Competitions: Preparing for and performing well on the AMC 8 builds a strong foundation for higher-level competitions such as the AMC 10/12 and beyond.
A Fair, Professional Starting Point
For students beginning their journey in mathematics competitions, the AMC 8 offers a fair and professional starting point. With both online and offline formats available each January, every student has the opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical thinking and earn recognition for their effort.
